Community Outreach: Book Bikes

Book Bikes

Book bikes are an excellent outreach tool for any size of library. They're fun to look at and a novelty which makes them attract the eye of passers-by. Libraries may use book bikes to attend fairs alongside a booth, go to special community events, have checkouts alongside of an outdoor storytime, or to provide free books. No matter their use, there is no denying that this new outreach vehicle is a star.

Book Bike Week has been celebrated during the first week of August by the ABOS organization on their social media channels. The goal is to celebrate book bikes and the libraries and librarians that make them possible. As Book Bikes have become more popular, they've gained a following and have had several articles written about them. Peruse the articles below if you'd like to learn more about this amazing outreach tool.

"Book bikes are a valuable library outreach vehicle that are essential in connecting communities with books and materials from across the United States and around the world. Book bikes have the unique capability of popping up in neighborhoods and other community gathering places, providing library service to individuals who may never walk through the doors of a library building. Not only do book bikes meet library patrons at their point of need, but book bikes also celebrate and promote health, movement, exercise, and getting outdoors."
—David Kelsey, 2021 ABOS President

Equipment

Book bikes are often customized based on the needs of the library. The bike, or more-likely a tricycle, needs to be able to support the weight of both a rider and the shelving unit. Work with a local craftsman or a vendor to supply your book bike.

The companies below have worked with libraries to supply and create custom setups for a book bike or book trailer.

Book Bikes in ND

Minot Public Library's book bike is filled with gently used donated books for all ages. The bike is taken to outreach events by trailer, and visitors can take and keep the books they choose. The library has periodically loaned out the bike to be used by other organizations at their events.

Fargo Public Library's Book Bike appears at community events that are accessible by bike from the library's downtown location as well as other outdoor and offside library programs. Community members are able to check out materials and create or renew their library cards.
