In 1979, the North Dakota State Library Commission changed its name to the North Dakota State Library.
After a decade in the Randal Building, the State Library had outgrown its space and was poised to return to the Liberty Memorial Building (LMB) after the State Historical Society moved out. But first, the building underwent a major renovation, which updated systems to modern code specifications. The renovation retained the building's unique architectural details.
In the summer of 1982, with the renovations complete, the State Library returned to the LMB.

Today, the LMB is home to the North Dakota State Library and North Dakota Parks and Recreation.
